Brilliant, Simple, Sustainable – three words that could easily be used to describe Coolar and yet they still don’t fully convey the energy and passion this group devotes to making a positive impact in the world.

Coolar’s business is refrigerators, specifically fridges for storing medications and medicines. Unlike many companies though, it operates in remote areas in developing regions.  And, in a double whammy of care, it provides refrigerators that are not powered by electricity, a crucial difference in places where electricity is expensive or unreliable

Instead, the Coolar fridge uses a warm water system that is easy to generate through solar energy and easy to store in a water tank. It does not require any short-lived batteries or electronic components, nor rotating parts. And in case you were wondering, it does not use any hazardous refrigerants or lubricants. They are as close to carbon neutral as a fridge can be.

The point of it all is to assist doctors and health professionals preserve life-saving medicines and vaccines in an economical and sustainable way. Moreover, the technology means that unlike conventional fridges, there are no running costs and there is no risk of products freezing. This last point is crucial as this reduces wastage in areas that are often resource poor.
