03 Sep Rumi Spice: US Veterans Help Afghan Farmers Thrive with Community Agriculture and – Saffron
Rumi Spice is a social enterprise that provides high-quality, sustainably farmed and the world’s most coveted spice –saffron, to global markets by sourcing directly from rural Afghan farmers in an economic partnership. And this is where the story gets more unique. The team behind Rumi is a group of US military veterans.
Since leaving the military, the co-founders felt they still have unfinished business to support Afghanistan and its people and founded Rumi Spice to work directly with Afghan farmers.
These women understood first hand the challenges and opportunities facing the country, and found a way to to strengthen Afghanistan’s greatest resource… its people, by community led enterprise. Rumi Spice wants to catalyze market driven economic development, one farmer at a time, by reinvesting profits to build the agricultural and manufacturing infrastructure.
Since they began, Rumi Spice has hired 75 Afghan women, started their first processing facility, with over 35 farmers in their network. They now export 5% of Afghanistan’s total saffron production at 100 kg, and now make up 3.6% of all of Afghanistan’s agricultural FDI.
Why we love Rumi Spice: A smart, innovative and holistic way to bring regional stability and economic prosperity – one saffron flower at a time.
